Today on the Signorile Show

It has been one month since the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, causing hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil to continuously spill into the Gulf. And as lucky as we've been, the tides are now changing, causing the oil to wash up on shore in many parts of the South East United States. Clean up crews and environmentalists are collecting samples from areas affected by the spill to "establish liability" of who is responsible. But is there a conflict of interest here? According to reports, "the laboratory that officials have chosen to process virtually all of the samples is part of an oil and gas services company in Texas that counts oil firms, including BP, among its biggest clients." We'll discuss what environmentalists are are doing to make sure the tests are holding those responsible accountable.

The National Defense Authorization Act passed in the House Wednesday, with nothing written to indicate inclusion of the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. But openly gay Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank is hopeful, saying that he expects an amendment for repeal to be added next week to the House version when it is discussed on the floor. He also says because of the focus on repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," it pushes any consideration for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act back to June, maybe even July.

Last month, we had a discussion about the Texas School Board that had revised its history books, picking and choosing subjects to focus on. A lot of what has been added focus on topics that reflect the conservative movement in America, including the importance of Governors such as George Wallace and Orval Faubus, and the conservative uprising of Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America and the Moral Majority. This is a huge problem, because of Texas's large size, which leads publishers to sell the same textbooks they sell to Texas to be sold across the country. After much protest and discussion, the Texas School Board is scheduled to make the final vote on whether to proceed with their curriculum. We'll get into this, today as well.
