Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Recently social media has been abuzz with images of environmental activists in Kayaks attempting to stop an icebreaker and supply vessel called the Fennica which is crucial to oil drilling operations in the Artic from continuing its mission.   Joining me today to discuss the ongoing protests by Greenpeace USA and other activists in Portland Oregon of the of the Royal Dutch Shell Oil company and their Arctic oil drilling operation is Arun Gupta, a contributor to The Nation.  You can also follow Arun on twitter.

In July of 1972 the Democratic Party held its convention in Miami Beach and for the first time the National Women’s Political Caucus, which was founded by icons including Betty Friedan, Dorothy Height and Gloria Steinem were trying to leverage women’s power at a political convention and get Democratic candidate George McGovern to make the legalization of abortion a part of his platform.  These protests were documented at the time in a documentary film called “Year of the Woman” by filmmaker Sandra Hochman, however after only a few showings of the film in 1973 it disappeared from public view for over forty years.  Joining me today to talk all about this “lost film” and how it has now become available again is Rebecca Traister who wrote all about the film for The Huffington Post and is a writer-at-large at New York Magazine and The Cut. Her 2010 book Big Girls Don’t Cry is about women and feminism in the 2008 election.  You can also follow Rebecca on twitter.
