On November 3rd, voters in the
nation’s fourth-largest city will decide whether to ban discrimination against
LGBT people in employment, housing and public accommodations. The Bill known as HERO ( Houston’s Equal Right Ordinance) was originally passed by the city council, but due to
questionable legal challenges and court ruling s in favor of the measure’s
opponents the bill now appear on a ballot and its fate one way or another will
have long lasting ripple effect across the country. Joining me today to talk all about the measure and the upcoming vote is John Wright a freelance journalist based in Dallas and the publisher of Lone Star Q, Texas' Statewide LGBT News
Source.
In the hit show Orange Is the New Black, actress Laverne Cox’s transgender
character is verbally harassed by other prisoners, beaten up, and thrown into
solitary confinement under the guise of keeping her safe, and according to LGBT
advocacy organization Black & Pink that is par for the course for many LGBT
people behind bars in real life. The group, which conducted and just released the findings of the largest LGBT prisoner survey to date and the results reveal
that many of them are raped and denied basic necessities and medical care. Joining me today to discuss the survey, its
results and the need for reforming our prison system is Rev. Jason M. Lydon the National Director and Founder of Black
& Pink who is also a Community Minister in the Unitarian Universalist Church. You can also follow Jason on twitter.
