Breaking News: Dick Cheney Apologizes For Something!

Yesterday the Vice President was speaking at the National Press Club when he offended all the "hard-working white Americans" living in West Virginia:

"Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheney's on both his father's and his mother's side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother's side, the vice president said. "So I had Cheney's on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped."

The joke is almost as funny as the time Cheney shot a friend in the face, but not as funny as some of the things he told Tim Russert in the lead up to the Iraq War. But the amazing thing about this story is that the joke has forced Dick Cheney to do something years of lawsuits and congressional investigations haven't been able to do: Admit he was wrong.

"Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride tells [the Washington Post], "The Vice
President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."
Cheney's statement came after West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin added his voice to the chorus of outrage from Mountain State politicians and demanded an apology from the veep."
