California Ballot Measure May End Marriage -- For Everyone!
I just love this. Legal scholars say we're in uncharted territory with the California Supreme Court having ruled that gays must be allowed to marry, while a ballot measure by religious zealots trying to bar gays from marrying is on the ballot this November. The outcome of the zealots efforts, should they succeed, is that marriage could quite possibly be abolished for all California residents, straight, gay, whatever:
Should voters approve the measure, Cruz said, offering another potential outcome, it could inadvertently affect traditional marriages. That's because the amendment would undo only part of the court's decision -- allowing gay couples to marry -- but not the rest, which says that same-sex couples cannot be recognized differently than opposite-sex couples, he said.
"If you've got those two rules -- that you can't let them marry, but you can't give different options to gay and straight couples -- then one possible outcome, if the amendment were to pass, is that no one could get married in California," Cruz said.
It would be quite ironic to say the least. Sure, not all legal scholars agree with that assessment, but it underscores how uncertain this all is, and just how much the wingnuts' determination could create even more chaos. Best thing of course is to beat back the measure. Remember: EqualityforAll.com
