I think it's actually a good sign that Benedict has his surrogates out there trying to explain his latest vicious remarks attacking gay and transgender people. It shows they're not immune to criticism, and there certainly was outrage around the world to the pope's remarks:
During an interview on this morning on Radio 4's Today programme, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor said that the pope "wasn't condemning anyone or any person" with his comments.
The cardinal went on to say that the pope was only trying to emphasise the importance of the family, and the responsibility on humans to procreate.
Of course that's all just more spin, but why did such a high-level official, the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, need to go and defend the pope so recently after his outburst?
