Catholic League's Bill Donohue in a Snit

The Catholic League's pit bull Bill Donohue is frothing about my appearance on the Joy Behar show, defending against my tepid criticism of the Pope's vicious attacks on gay people by simply flat out lying:

None of what Signorile said is true. Not only has the pope never said that homosexuality is the “end of civilization,” a Lexis-Nexis search reveals that he has never even used that term.

It's a slick little claim and completely ridiculous. Benedict has time and again discussed homosexuality and gay marriage as part of a civilizational downfall, including claiming that gay marriage is "an attack on creation."

Donohue also claims that the Pope did not, as I stated, equate rainforest preservation with protecting culture from homosexuality and gay relationships. But this claim is also a complete distortion. Pope Benedict gave a much criticized speech saying that saving civilization from homosexuality was as important as defending the rainforests from environmental degradation:

The Pontiff made the remarks yesterday in an end-of-year address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration. He said that humanity needed to listen to the "language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman and behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations was a "destruction of God’s work".

As for my statement about the bishop of Guam, Donahue claims that I "twisted" what he said but it's pretty hard to deny that he said suicide bombers are better than gay people, which was how I characterized his statement. His quote is quite clear:

Islamic fundamentalists clearly understand the damage that homosexual behavior inflicts on a culture. That is why they repress such behavior by death. Their culture is anything but one of self-absorption. It may be brutal at times, but any culture that is able to produce wave after wave of suicide bombers (women as well as men) is a culture that at least knows how to value self-sacrifice...One does not have to agree with the gruesome ways that the fundamentalists use to curb the forces that undermine their culture to admit that the Islamic fundamentalist charge that Western Civilization in general and the U.S.A, in particular is the 'Great Satan' is not without an element of truth."

This isn't the first time of course that Donohue has attacked me for my valid criticism -- and I've even had him on the show several times -- with distortions of both my and the Pope's words. And if you've followed it, you know he has had an obsession with gay sex and my butt. Very interesting.
