4:35pm ET - Loud, right-wing voices are endlessly trying to drown out the voices of the LGBT movement, but despite this, society has become far more aware and accepting of gay men and women. Gays and lesbians are getting more media representation, more legal rights, and are by far living more comfortably today in what some have called a “post-closeted culture” than they did before the 1969 Stonewall Riots. These changes obviously make an impact on the LGBT community, but James Joseph Dean, a sociology professor at Sonoma State University, asks an interesting question: how are heterosexuals affected by the proliferation of gays and lesbians into a heteronormative society? In Straights: Heterosexuality in Post-Closeted Culture, Dean conducts a study in which he explores how heterosexual people of varying races, classes, and backgrounds react to the increasing visibility of homosexual people. He also discusses recent challenges to the concept of traditional gender roles, new definitions of “masculinity” and “femininity”, and how an increasing acceptance of different sexualities encourages heterosexual couples to explore their own sexualities.  He joins us today to talk about his book.  You can also follow James on facebook.
