Today On The Signorile Show!

3:35pm ET - Yesterday, GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) released its biennial National School Climate Survey report, which shows how ongoing hostile school climates impact the safety and mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students, as well as their educational outcomes.  Joining us today to discuss the latest edition of the survey, which first began in 1999 and remains one of the few studies to examine the middle and high school experiences of LGBT youth nationally is Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN’s Executive Director. You can also follow Eliza on twitter

4:05pm ET - Recently the leaders of the Roman Catholic Churched convened for what is called a synod, during the meeting a draft of a paper which discussed the possibility of the Church becoming more accepting towards gay people was released.  This document was described as a "bombshell” and the Human Rights Campaign, announced it as a "seismic shift in Rome."  However, shortly after the draft was released the Catholic Church's Synod of Bishops decided to backpedal on its welcoming language for LGBT people and their families.  Joining us today to discuss the synod's initial draft and final document is Patrick Hornbeck, associate professor and chairman in the theology department at Fordham University. You can also follow the Fordham University Theology Department on twitter.

4:35pm ET - Earlier this summer the media was saturated with images of armored vehicles and police officers pointing semi-automatic rifles at demonstrating citizens in Ferguson, Missouri.  The clashes in that St. Louis suburb set off a national debate over the militarization of our police departments and their over use of force.  Joining us today to discuss this growing trend and the increase in SWAT raids by law enforcement agencies across the country is Shane Bauer, a journalist with Mother Jones San Francisco bureau and the co-author of the memoir A Sliver of Light, which details his time as a hostage in Iran with his now-wife Sarah Shourd and friend Josh Fattal from 2009-2011.  You can also follow Shane on twitter.
