High school teacher Emily Herx first started fertility treatments with the
blessing of her principal. Two weeks
later, the monsignor called her “a grave immoral sinner,” and she was fired. Herx filed a discrimination lawsuit, but the
church argues that she violated church standards. Then, the church went a step further to say
that religious liberty rights protect the school from even appearing before the
court.
Reporter Molly Redden covered the case for Mother Jones. She joins us
today to explore the conflict between individual rights and religious
exemptions.
