3:15pm ET - On January 16, 2015
the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it was granting four petitions to review
the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in DeBoer v. Snyder, which had rejected the claim that same-sex couples have a
constitutional right to marry and to have such marriages recognized by other
states. Joining us today to discuss this
announcement and what we can expect from the Justices is Art Leonard, professor of law at New York Law School.
4:35pm ET - In 2015, according to
a new study by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a group that
evaluates the local tax burden in every state, the poorest fifth of Americans
will pay on average 10.9 percent of their income in state and local taxes, the
middle fifth will pay 9.4 percent, and the top 1 percent will pay on average
only 5.4 percent. Joining us today to discuss how these unfair tax systems not only exacerbate widening income
inequality in the short term, but also leave states struggling to meet their
basic needs in the long term is Carl Davis, a Senior Analyst for the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). You can also follow ITEP on twitter
