Since 2011, Republican-led states across the
country have passed various forms of voter identification laws, which they
argue are necessary to prevent voter fraud.
However, advocates of voting rights say that these laws are intended to
depress voter turnout among groups that lean Democratic, including low-income
and minority voters. Joining me today to
discuss Voter ID laws such as the one in Kansas that requires people to provide
proof of citizenship in order to register to vote and how they discourage young voters in particular is Doug Bonney
the Chief Counsel and Legal Director of The ACLU of Kansas.
Throughout time, the structures and
dynamics of families and family life have changed considerably and evolved to
reflect the norms and traditions of the day and age in which they are found. In
his latest book, Modern Families:Stories of Extraordinary Journeys to Kinship, sociologist Joshua Gamson explores the concept of kinship
and captures a new picture of family life through a range of personal tales,
including his own. Using these experiences, he details new and unconventional
ways to family creation and discusses the social stigma, ethical, and legal issues
that are associated with the changing dynamics of the modern family. Joshua
joins me today to talk about the book, his personal experience and the importance
of understanding the new meaning of family life. You can also follow Joshua on twitter.
