The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127
On Monday, the US
Supreme Court announced that it will not hear an appeal from a federal circuit
court’s decision refusing to halt Seattle’s minimum wage. However, according to
Ian Millhiser, Senior Fellow at the
Center for American Progress Action Fund and the Editor of ThinkProgress Justice, that although this announcement is the
latest in a series of embarrassments for the plaintiffs in this case it doesn’t mean that this is the end of the lawsuit altogether. Ian joins me on the show
today to talk all about the case called International
Franchise Association v. City of Seattle and what this recently SCOTUS
ruling means for this effort to undermine Seattle’s protections for low-income
workers.
TROUBLE IN THE TAP: AMERICA'S WATER CRISIS
Our rivers, lakes,
aquifers, and coastal waters aren’t unlimited resources that can handle
whatever we take out or dump in. These waters need protection as well and
joining me for today’s installment of “Trouble In The Tap: America’s Water
Crisis” is Steve Fleischli who is
the Senior Attorney and Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s
Water Program to talk all about what can be done to protect and defend our
natural water resources. Steve is a veteran
of the ongoing fight to protect our water from contamination and pollution at
its source, and he joins me right now on the show to fill us in on the many
projects and battles going on around the country that the NRDC is currently
working on to ensure safe and clean drinking water.

As he
continues to campaign for Democratic primary votes, Sen. Bernie Sanders has
also begun to detail a vision for where the movement that has developed to
support his candidacy might move the Democratic Party. Joining me today to discuss the Senator’s impact
on the Democratic primary and future platform is John Nichols the
Washington Correspondent for The Nation.
TROUBLE IN THE TAP: AMERICA'S WATER CRISIS
Since the water crisis in Flint, Michigan made national headlines, we have slowly been learning that Flint is just tip of the iceberg, and that all across the country our water is at risk, yet nobody seems to be talking about it. Which is why we are devoting an entire week to the issue on the show by looking at the problem from all angles and asking the important questions like what’s in your water? Should you get it tested? Are there solutions? Why is it happening? And, what can every one of us do to get out there and fight for this most basic of human rights.
Joining me today to help us kick off the very
first installment of “Trouble in the Tap” our continuing coverage of America’s
water crisis and to break down how pervasive the problem is across the country
and what everyone of us can do to get out there and fight for change and
justice is the award winning consumer advocate and environmental activist Erin Brockovich who has been working
with the law firm Weitz & Luxenberg on water issues across the country, and
whose exhaustive investigation back in 1996 famously uncovered that the utility
giant Pacific Gas & Electric had been poisoning the small town of Hinkley,
California’s water for over 30 years, which led to the largest direct action
lawsuit of its kind, spear-headed by Erin and lawyer Ed Masry, which resulted
in the company being forced to pay out the largest toxic tort injury settlement
in US history: $333 million in damages to more than 600 Hinkley residents.
