It has long been
believed by many people that the AIDS epidemic in the United States was started
by a single man who supposedly picked up H.I.V. in Haiti or Africa and spread
it to dozens, even hundreds, of men before his death in 1984. This man, who was later identified as a
French Canadian flight attendant named GaƩtan Dugas, and labeled Patient Zero,
has long been long been blamed for setting off the entire American AIDS
epidemic, which traumatized the nation in the 1980s and has since killed more
than 500,000 Americans, a new genetic analysis of stored blood samples,
bolstered by some intriguing historical detective work, have apparently cleared his name. Joining me today to talk all about this new study and the myth of patient zero is Donald G. McNeil Jr. a science and health
reporter for The New York Times and the author of Zika: The Emerging Epidemic.
Back in August, Hillary Clinton declared in a
speech that "the emerging racist ideology known as the alt-right" had
through Trump "effectively taken over the Republican Party", but who
are the thought leaders behind this growing movement and what are they planning
for after the election? Joining me today
to talk all about one of the rising stars of this white supremacist movement and
his attempts to make racism cool is Josh Harkinson of Mother Jones.
