The Republican Dilemma: Lying vs. Getting Stuck with the Embryo Avenger
So Rudy Giuliani decided to gamble on actually being consistent and pushing the idea of a real "big tent" instead of the laughable myth that's been sold all these years. Predictably, it brought outrage from the loud and powerful crowd of theocratic types. But more interesting were the strategist types like former RNC chair Richard Bond, who basically said it was nice to be honest and to create dialogue, but when speaking to the Republican base, history has shown that the truth doesn't work: Better to lie.
"He’s going to tell it like it is about who he is, and for that he deserves positive recognition,” said Richard Bond, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who is supporting Mr. McCain. “But the history of the Republican presidential nominating process, going back to John Anderson or Arlen Specter to name a few, suggests that that kind of dialogue and that kind of approach has not proved successful.”
In addition to now being proudly pro-choice, Giuliani is suddenly back to saying he favors civil unions, after last week's flip was a big flop. That was fast. With Giuliani confessing that he is a homo-loving baby murderer, Mitt Romney being exposed as Satan himself, and John McCain too prickly and nutty to put up with the Pat Robertson crowd for too long before snapping at them, it looks like the Republican candidates' ranks will thin out quicker than we thought. They might only be left with Senator "save the embryos" Brownback, which could make things very, very interesting.
