Gitmo Will Stay Open -- So that Repubs Have Something to Run On

LA Times says that the momentum in the White House to close Gitmo has shifted -- not because of any high-minded reasons, of course, but because the increasingly desperate Republicans need something to run on, and if abuse and indefinite detention of foreigners without a trial can do it, so be it:

The latest attempt to shut it down is facing collapse: The detention facility has been embraced by many Republicans as a potent political symbol in their quest to seize the terrorism issue ahead of next year's elections.
