Dream Ticket is the Only Solution

As many of you who listen to the show know, I was hoping for Clinton to either lose Texas and Ohio and drop out or for her to win big (and it would have to have been real big) and Obama drop out. (I've supported both of them and have in recent weeks wanted one or the other to win -- over the idea of this going to the superdelegates or the convention.) But that didn't happen.

Hillary is now hinting at a split ticket -- of course the stickler will be who is on top, and I realize that is not a minor matter -- and really, this is the only solution. There is just no way that Clinton should be expected to bow out with 50% of Democrats behind her passionately -- we've not been, at least in my lifetime, in this kind of situation so late in the primary season -- and after winning the biggest states and ones that are very representative of the country.

The Obama people can keep talking math and numbers and delegate counts, but after a while that comes off cold and not about the passion that is the stuff of elections (and Obama's campaign for that matter). People want the electable candidate, and I would think that includes the superdelegates, and right now it is very much open for debate as to who is electable. As Clinton said, no president in recent history (since JFK) has won the presidency without winning Ohio in his primary. It would be horrible to leave this decision to the superdelegates, and pushing for either one to bow out now will only embolden that candidate's supporters -- I think the calls from Kerry, Richardson and other male politicians last week for Hillary to drop out only gave her more support, particularly among women (and it was Dianne Feinstein who came to her defense). That will hurt us in the general election.

The only way out, and still have a strong chance against McCain, is having them both on the ticket. Needless to say, we'll be talking a lot about all of this on the show.
