NBA Star+Homophobia=Sacramento Mayor?

Former Phoenix Suns star Kevin Johnson is vying to become the next mayor of his hometown in today's election. Johnson (who's made a living chasing half naked men and a ball around for the NBA) recently said that he thought marriage should be between "a man and a woman."

Stonewall Democrats are running TV ad's attacking Johnson's position on gay marriage and his "vagueness on abortion rights." Of course, the Mayor of Sacramento has about as much control over issues like gay marriage and abortion rights as the 'National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators' (In fact the NCCCO might have more power on these issues). But the fact remains that Sacramento has seen a rash of gay bashings recently, so defeating an anti-gay mayoral candidate will send a powerful message to the rest of the city's homophobes.
