4:35pm ET - Abby Rubenfeld has a long and successful career as a civil right attorney and has served on the board of directors of the Human Rights Campaign and as the Legal Director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.  She currently serves on the board of directors of the ACLU of Tennessee and has a general law practice in Nashville with an emphasis on family law, sexual orientation and AIDS-related issues.  She has been involved in numerous civil rights cases, but her most high-profile one currently is Tanco v. Haslam, a suit demanding that Tennessee recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. Recently a federal judge in Nashville ruled in favor of such recognition and said the state must immediately recognize the marriages of the three couples who brought the suit. An appeals court, however, put the judge’s order on hold while the case made its way through the appeals process.  Then on Friday, January 16 the Supreme Court of the United States announced a landmark decision to hear marriage equality cases from Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky.  Abby who is representing the couples along with other private attorneys and the National Center for Lesbian Rights joins us today to discuss this case and the many recent developments concerning marriage equality for all Americans.  You can also follow Abby on twitter.
