When Communist Party leaders in China adopted the infamous one-child policy in 1980, they hoped that by curbing the country’s birth-rate they would help lift China’s poorest from the depth of poverty and increase the country’s global standing. But at what cost? In her new book One Child: The Story of China's Most Radical Experiment Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mei Fong tells the story of how this policy came to be implemented and details how the repercussions of population control will continue to reverberate throughout China for many years. Mei joins me on the show today to talk all about the book and the effect that the one-child policy is having on Chinese society. You can also follow Mei on twitter.
