Over the weekend, people across Italy gathered
in support of civil rights for LGBT Italians, the demonstrations began as a
result of the increasing concern in the country that a proposal to same-sex
legalize civil unions could fail in the Italian senate, where it will be voted
on in a secret ballot. Joining me today
to talk all about the current state of the fight for LGBT equality in Italy is Lorenza Antonucci a social policy
scholar and Senior Lecturer at Teesside University in the UK. You can also follow Lorenza on twitter.
On Monday, The Supreme Court ruled in the case Montgomery v. Louisiana that people who
were sentenced to life in prison without parole for crimes committed as
juveniles have the right to seek parole as adults and be given back some
portion of their life. The decision
comes at the same time as the President’s announcement of a series of executive actions addressing the use of solitary confinement in federal prisons and a ban
on solitary confinement for juvenile and low-level offenders. Joining me today to talk all about these
latest developments in criminal justice is Ian Millhiser a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund
and the Editor of ThinkProgress Justice and the author of Injustices:The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted. You can also follow Ian on twitter.
