We knew this, but when you get a glimpse of the way people cloak their racism in all kinds of high-minded crap you realize that it's pretty scary and daunting in this election:

Paul MacDonald, a retired social worker mingling over coffee after Mass at Holy Rosary, said he had voted for Mr. Kerry four years ago and Mrs. Clinton in the primary but now planned to vote for Mr. McCain because of “the life issue.”

The choice of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as Mr. McCain’s running mate had clinched it for him, Mr. MacDonald said. “She is anti-abortion, anti-gay-marriage, anti-Big Oil, a lifetime member of the N.R.A., she hunts, she fishes — she is the perfect woman!”

One parishioner ruled out voting for Mr. Obama explicitly because he is black. “Are they going to make it the Black House?” Ray McCormick asked, to embarrassed hushing from a half dozen others gathered around the rectory kitchen. (Five of the six, all lifelong Democrats who supported Mrs. Clinton in the primary, said they now lean toward Mr. McCain.)

Same-Sex Marriage Opponents Seek To Screw Things Up

Way back in 1913 Massachusetts law makers made it illegal to tie the knot in the state if it that same marriage could not or would not be recognized by the couple's home state. The law, which was repealed last month, was racially motivated, meant to bow to states where interacial marriage was not legal.

Now the antigay group Mass Resistance wants the law back on the books and is trying to get it on the ballot this November:

Brian Camenker of the group Mass Resistance said Friday lawmakers and Gov. Deval Patrick bowed to the will of the "gay lobby" last month by approving the repeal of a 1913 statute that banned such marriages....

...The group will need about 32,000 signatures to get their question on the ballot.

Proponents of same-sex marriage are confident that even if this measure somehow makes its way onto the November ballot, it certainly won't measure up with the residents of Massachusetts.
