Yesterday I asked on the show if former RNC chairman and Bush 2004 campaign manager Ken Mehlman -- who, while closeted, helped push the antigay, anti-marriage ballot measures in the states to re_elect George W.Bush -- should be forgiven now that is out of the closet and helped to get marriage equality in New York? And I played this clip from activist Jon Winkleman, who confronted Mehlman at the Stonewall Inn on the night of the historic vote. Andy Towle explains some of Winkleman's reasoning also outlines some of the work that Mehlman has done for marriage equality. On the show, most callers were completely unforgiving -- "he has blood on his hands, he'll have to do much, much more" -- but one, a gay Republican, said we should move on. What do you think?

Today's Show: David Mixner Speaks Out
3:30 ET: The acclaimed author, political strategist,and gay civil rights activist David Mixner -- an advisor to President Clinton, who broke with the president over "don't ask, don't tell" -- will join me to discuss the current state of the LGBT movement. A supporter of and organizer for Barack Obama in the presidential race, he's been highly outspoken and critical of the president on LGBT rights. He's also now speaking out about the national LGBT groups. In his four part blog post, he explains why idly waiting by the side lines for the right time to strike is a big mistake. Mixner also recently called, along with Cleve Jones, for a march on Washington, which is now happening in the fall. On the show, he'll explain some of his observations and criticisms and why we have to move now.

Crackpot Fun!
This is my interview from today with Rev. Leroy Swailes. Why did we talk to him? Though not any major player on the religious right, he has influence, sadly, over religious people in Maryland and the Washington area who follow what he says (he spoke at the DC hearing on the new law recognizing marriages of gays and lesbians outside the district, and got huge cheers) and he represents the views of many other people across the country, frightening as that may be. Plus, we need to laugh at these crackpots! We discussed his unique understanding of homosexuality.
UPDATE: I forgot to add that after the interview a co-worker of Rev. Swailes called the show, a woman who works with him at his day job I guess. Amber said that he told her about the upcoming interview, in the parking lot, after he saw a Sirius radio antenna on her car. He said, I'm going on "abomination radio," and she said, "OutQ? I listen to that all the time." She is pro-gay and obviously doesn't agree with Swailes' views, like most people at work. After he told her what time he was going on, she said, "OMG, you are going on the Michelangelo Signorile Show! I can't wait for that." She said he took off from work just to stay home and do the interview, and she said that everyone at work was listening to the interview (half have XM, half have Sirius) in the parking lot! Hilarious.

When you are reading from your script (is what it sound like your doing on your program) you are going so fast a person is lost on what you are discussing.
That crazy lady you have recording of, well I am embarrassed to have her claim to be republican. I would think they would be some of them on the left side to.
Usually the first hour of your show am changing channel. Is when you really ramble and do not make sense. Can go on about more topics but I really don't think you even read these comments so I am thinking I am waisting my time typing this now.

I'm still a huge fan. I enjoy the format of the show, with news first and of course your introduction to the hour ahead. This let's me know what's ahead in case I have to be out of my truck. I'm still concerned with peoples picky and ridiculous complaints about your so called "pregnant pauses." Have listened to interviews about speech on N.P.R. and have learned that this shows cognition. The time you take to organize your thoughts or emphasize a point gives me the appropriate time to digest what your saying.
If I was to critique, I would say that you speak too softly at times which leaves me turning up my radio to hear you. It may just be that you guys keep the mic levels to low for you. It's not a huge problem, (love it when you say that word) but, it's been consistent since I've been listening. You'll still have to beat me to keep me away, the discussions, interviews and analysis are so relevant and I feel a strong connection.

You are a breath of fresh air - impeccably prepared, extremely articulate, and always always courteous and thoughtful. I particularly like the extended 4-hour format which give you the luxury of taking your time on in-depth issues that require detailed coverage, while allowing the freedom to let down once and a while on lighter subject matter. While representing the gay community, herding us like cats, I consider you a mainstay in the voice of America's gay leadership. You're out there everyday slogging it out in the trenches - not sitting in 1640 Rhode Island Ave behind a bunker planning dress-up dinners for each other.

I love the show and I listen to it religiously on my drives to and from work. Michaelangelo has a keen ability to facilitate interesting discussions. However, at times, I think he can jump to conclusions and dismiss or trivialize opposing arguments. He does not do this very often, but when he does, I usually yell at the radio! I think it would be fascinating if you were to have someone from the log cabin republicans facilitate the show during one of Michaelangelo's off-days. I, for one, would love to call in and debate (and probably yell at) a guest host from the log cabin republicans. But I think it would make good radio and provide more to the listener than the dreaded "best of."

I like the show, in a very, very large way! Michelangelo does a fine job of analyzing the various daily issues which come up the pike. He tries to be fair. Often times, however, Michelangelo does not go far enough into any one issue. Too, too, many times, Mr. Signorile jumps from one issue to the next in the four-one hour segments, often leaving that topic hanging in the wind. It's almost as if that issue never existed when the next segment comes around. That is my biggest criticism. This being said, does not mean, I don't think he has one of the best political talk shows of all the Talk Left talkers out here.

Carrie Prejean's Defenders
On the news that Carrie Prejean, Miss California, was joining up with the National Organization for Marriage we had quite a discussion on the show, with defenders of hers calling in and even defending her breast implants. Somehow, that is "biblically correct." One man, Jerry in Daytona Beach, used the usual "some of my best friends are..." argument. I spent quite some time with him, drawing him out, and eventually all his bigotry showed itself. That caused another hour of discussion on the show. Take a listen to the call.

I have been waiting for OutQ to come to XM since the merger and I have not been disappointed. I started listening to OutQ since the first day and it is by far the channel I listen to the most. I find most of your discussions quite engaging. I like that there is an emphasis on gay-themed topics and/or the gay perspective, but also like that it is not EXCLUSIVELY gay themed. In other words, it's wonderful that you talk about what is in the news and what is on people's minds, whether or not there is a gay angle to it You do your homework and it shows. I would like to see a bit more of the occasional fluff/silly piece (for just a few minutes) for the sake of comic relief in these troubled times. One criticism: Your listener survey does not have Spell-Check. [Note from MS: You're right about the spell-check, and we all make mistakes. I will do a spell-check of all the comments from now on before posting.]

The show is interesting. In my view it would be even better if you stuck to current news and issues and told us less about your new sneakers or the mouse in your apartment. The day you dedicated so much time on the mouse issue I would have preferred to be at the dentist having a root canal.

Sirius came with my car when I bought it about 2 years ago. I didn't discover OutQ until about 6 months later. I was driving over the course of the year from southern California up to Vancouver, across to Ottawa, and finishing in Miami as a part of my work, spending several months in a few major cities along the way. Several of these drives were 10 plus hours in one day, and when I got tired of the music channels I accidentally found OutQ and became addicted. I grew to enjoy your show so much that I started to tune in online while at work. I even called in a few times when I was particularly steamed or intrigued by a subject. Four months ago I was transferred to Tokyo, Japan for work. As you can imagine getting any kind of US news is difficult except by way of Internet and International CNN (which in itself is a very different view of the world). It took me awhile to adjust to the Japanese world, and eventually I began listening to the online Sirius on a regular basis. I can’t always catch your show since my work schedule doesn’t always allow the time to tune in for the replay, and the live version comes on at 3am local time here. It always brightens, or enlightens my day when I get to listen to your program even though I am no longer able to interact since it is a replay I am listening to and not a live broadcast. Although occasionally I may not agree with your take on a particular subject, I like and respect that you do make a decent argument for your opinion for a community. Although it seems like you are getting there, I really wish you were more mainstream and front and center to get your opinions and ideas out to the masses. Keep up the good work!

The show is so-so. Compared to the other lame shows, it is okay, but not great. It is obviously much deeper than the Fox "News" claptrap or the idiocy found on Joe Scarborough's morning show, but that is not saying much. I find the show very entertaining though and like the counter-attacks on the right wing on this program. This show is not afraid to go after the right wing idiots.

I think that this show has changed a lot for the better in just the past two weeks. I think Signorile strongest suit is playing devil's advocate, and I would really like to go through a segment and not have a clue about his personal thoughts. I think that he does articulate opposing viewpoints very well, and I like this aspect of the show. At times, I find his opinions personally confounding because they are so internally inconsistent, but I have seen a lot less of that in the past two to three weeks -- I had almost written the show off because I didn't care for the style of the host, but I think it has changed in some subtle way, and I do stay tuned to the show most of the time. To be fair, I usually tune out only if it's a topic that I either have only a tangential interest in or that I have heard beaten to death. I think in particular, his discussions on the Texas woman who wanted to preserve her son’s sperm were very well reasoned, and I think it's a good example of what a great talk show should do. Thanks for making it worth hanging in there.

I think you and Rush have much in common. I know you both are really entertainers, but you try to come off as political talking heads. You both go after the other side for exactly the same stuff you defend your own side for. It is hard to take either of you seriously. If you are going to dislike a trait in someone then do so across the board. Don't hate the right for it and defend it in the left. But you can still be fun to listen to, so thanks for your hard work.

You know I love your show, but here's there is some extra info I'd like: 1. I'd like David to post the names of the various music he uses for his bumpers and intros. 2. I don't always get to listen to all the news around the world, but you find some pretty interesting stuff. I would like to know more. Can David post a reference for those and post a reference the music in Clips of the Week on your website? 3. When you interview an author about a new book, could post the author and book name on your website? 4. What is the name of the piece you play in your intro that has the didgeridoo in it? It's cool. Your program as well as QutQ News presents a wealth of information, but there is no way to ever reference it again. The bumper music and Clips of the Week is a great artistic production, but, it to can only be enjoyed once and then it's gone forever. Bitches, please archive this stuff for your listeners to access! Some days I get fired up about the issue at hand, other days I feel like my exact thoughts are being publicly expressed. I think that your show is very insightfull. I don't like that I get the feeling that you are anti-religion. I am homosexual, but I love my wife. I do not ever think of myself in a relationship with another man. With men it is mostly physical. I get so much out of my relationship with my wife. However, we do not have sex.
